What is a Transformer and Why Convert kVA to Amps for Sizing?
Introduction to Transformers
A Transformer (often called a Trafo) is a static electrical device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through the process of electromagnetic induction.
Simply logic: a transformer acts as an electrical “pressure regulator.” It can increase voltage (Step-Up) so electricity can be transmitted over long distances or decrease voltage (Step-Down) so it is safe to use by equipment in our homes or factories.
Why Convert to Amps? Just like with generators; cables, breakers (MCB/MCCB), and busbars do not care about the transformer’s kVA rating.
These components only care about heat. Heat is generated by electrical current (Amps). If we size cables only based on kVA without calculating the Amperes, we risk causing a fire because the cables may be too small to withstand the actual current flowing through them.
